Google Ads for a Small Business: How Not to Burn Your Budget
"I tried Google Ads and it doesn't work." We hear that sentence a lot. It almost always comes from someone who launched a campaign alone, with the settings Google suggests by default, and without conversion tracking. Conversion tracking is the mechanism that counts how many people actually called or left their details. Google's system works very well. It just works in favor of whoever set it up right.
The five mistakes that burn budget
- Keywords that are too broad. A campaign on the word lawyer will also pay for law students looking for study material. Better to pay only for exact phrases from someone looking to hire a lawyer right now
- No negative keywords. If you don't tell Google what not to show you for, the ad will also appear to people searching for free, or do it myself, or jobs. A good negative keyword list saves a large part of the budget
- No conversion tracking. If you don't count how many calls, WhatsApp messages and forms came from each keyword, there's no way to know which keyword brings customers and which one just takes money
- Sending everyone who clicks to the homepage. Someone who clicked an ad about a root canal and landed on a generic homepage closes the page. Every ad needs a page that talks about exactly what it promised
- Following Google's automatic recommendations. Google will suggest you broaden your keywords and raise your budget. Some of the recommendations are good for you and some are mostly good for Google. You need to go through them one by one
What a properly built campaign looks like
A campaign that makes money is built in a completely different order. First you research. Which phrases do people who are ready to pay actually search for, and how much does one click cost in your field. Then you build the structure. Small ad groups, each one speaking to a single search and leading to a page that matches it. Only then do you turn the campaign on. Conversion tracking is working from the very first shekel.
And from there the ongoing work begins. Every week we open the search terms report and see which searches the ads actually appeared for. Whatever wastes money we add to the negative keyword list, and whatever brings inquiries gets more budget. That way the cost of each inquiry goes down month after month instead of up.
How much budget do you really need?
The honest answer is enough to collect data. A campaign needs a few dozen clicks before you can tell what works. If a click in your field costs five shekels, that's one kind of budget. If it costs fifty shekels, and that happens mostly in law and insurance, that's a different story. A simple rule of thumb. If the monthly budget isn't enough for at least a hundred clicks, better to focus it on fewer keywords or consider another channel.
That's also why we sometimes say no. If the numbers in your field don't add up, better to hear that in the first call and not after three months of budget.
Paid or organic?
You need both, with the right timing. Paid brings inquiries from day one. It fits the beginning, the seasons and special offers. Organic takes months, but afterwards it brings inquiries without paying for every click. For a small business we usually start with focused paid ads that bring inquiries now, and in parallel build the organic side that lowers the dependence on ad budget over time.
Frequently asked questions
Technically yes, and it's a good way to learn. Just calculate how many hours it will take you and how much the mistakes along the way will cost. A neglected campaign usually wastes more money than professional management costs.
Google gives every keyword in the campaign a score from one to ten, based on how well the ad and the page it leads to match the search. A high score lowers your cost per click and raises your position. That's how you can compete with someone whose budget is bigger than yours.
Google has a mechanism that filters out invalid clicks, and you can also block IP addresses. In most fields the problem is smaller than people think. The reports will show if it's really happening to you.
